Puritan Profits
Jan 8th, 2008 by davidmw
As I talked a little at home about reading Puritans this year (That’s secret code for ‘explained to my wife why I needed to spend $65 dollars on books’), the question came as to what profit could possibly be had by reading books so far removed from our time and circumstance - not to mention just plain hard slog, sometimes, to follow along with.
Confronting the conscience: “We must go with the stick of divine truth and beat every bush behind which a sinner hides, until like Adam who hid, he stands before God in his nakedness.” since we are prone to run for the bushes, we need daily help to be brought before the living God “naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Heb. 4:13
).
Aside from the slight correction that the Puritans themselves and their writings are not so far removed from our time and circumstance because they worked so hard to mine the timeless truths from Scripture, truths that span the ages - they are my spiritual ancestors.
Josh, over at Gloria Filiorum Patres (The Glory of Children is their Fathers), wrote a post last year that I think perfectly sums the value in reading the puritans.
6. They show us true spirituality: Pray to emulate their spirituality by asking questions like these daily,
- Am I, like the Puritans, thirsting to glorify the triune God?
- Am I motivated by Biblical truth and Biblical fire?

Thanks for the trackback. Please know that I get all myself from those who are mostly dead and have written it better than I could ever imagine saying it.
Blessings.
Thank you, Joshua. I enjoy reading your blog. Does it mean I’m shallow if one of my favorite posts from there of late was the Three Stooges singing the alphabet?
